Guidance
Abstract
Guidance is written in Python with the GTK widgets and fits nicely into the GNOME desktop to monitor named storms and download their maps from Weather.com and present them in an easy to use UI. We have approximately 700 users on our network and wanted to meet the following goals:
Many users don't have access to the browser for the job duties and therefore cannot do this research on their own.
Many users don't have the skills to easily find this type of information and were spending time looking for it.
We are all on a shared T1 line to the Internet and the same maps were being downloaded over and over again.
Design
Using a perl module, the cron can download the desired maps every 30 or 60 minutes. They are placed into a common directory and the Guidance program loads them into tabs and presents a very simple UI. It's designed to scale from 1 user to hundreds of users. It could be run on individual workstations, over NFS mounts or on an application server (as we do it).
